ASE is a small regional airport with limited direct flights; Denver (DEN, ~3.5 hrs drive) is the practical alternative for most travelers. Aspen itself is extremely walkable and the start/finish is in a central park. Lodging is plentiful but expensive; book early for August.

Most runners fly into DEN and drive or take a shuttle to Aspen. RFTA bus service connects the Roaring Fork Valley. Packet pickup on Friday evening at Rio Grande Park makes a Friday arrival the minimum. Aspen is a world-class mountain town — plan to stay the weekend.

Best for / avoid if

Best for

  • Altitude-acclimated trail runners seeking a technical mountain challenge
  • Runners who want a race destination with world-class food, hiking, and culture
  • Those looking for a low-key, capped-field mountain race with a community feel
  • high-altitude trail runners
  • mountain adventure seekers

Avoid if

  • You haven't trained at altitude — the course will punish flatlanders
  • You need high-support aid stations or guaranteed medical coverage on course
  • You want a fast PR race — expect to add at least an hour to your road marathon time
  • unaccustomed to altitude
  • prefer flat courses

First-timer mistakes

Underestimating the altitude (start at 7,900 ft, peak over 10,100 ft) and not carrying a mandatory CORSAR card to packet pickup. Also: this is a cupless race — bring your own cup or soft flask.
