Travel complexity
3.5/10

Major international airport with frequent service; downtown Detroit hotels are walkable to start/finish. Main complexity is the passport requirement for international distances and early corral corralling logistics.

Stay downtown (Campus Martius / Greektown area) for walkable access to expo, start corrals, and finish line. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is reliable in Detroit. Windsor, ON is a short drive or walk across the bridge/tunnel for post-race dining.

Best for / avoid if

Best for

  • BQ chasers on a fast course
  • runners who want a true international race experience
  • destination racers pairing Detroit culture with competition
  • relay teams looking for a unique group challenge
  • PR-seekers
  • Boston qualifiers
  • runners wanting an international course
  • runners enjoying urban culture

Avoid if

  • you don't have a WHTI-compliant document (passport/passport card) for the international distances
  • you want a non-road or trail experience
  • you need guaranteed entry — it sells out within days of January 1 opening
  • Discomfort with border crossings
  • Preference for trails
  • Urban race avoiders

First-timer mistakes

Starting too fast — the Ambassador Bridge hill hits at mile 3 and will punish an aggressive opening pace. Also, many first-timers forget their passport or passport card; without a WHTI document you cannot register for the marathon or international half.

Race history

Race-trip notes

Fly into DTW (Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport), rent a car or use rideshare to reach downtown Detroit (~25–30 min). Stay downtown near Campus Martius for walkable expo and finish-line access. The race weekend spans Friday (expo) through Sunday (marathon), so plan for 3 nights. Windsor, Ontario is a short tunnel or bridge crossing away for a post-race dinner.

About this race

Runners tackle a mostly flat, fast course through Detroit's iconic neighborhoods — Woodbridge, the District Detroit, Eastern Market, and the Dequindre Cut — before finishing at Campus Martius Park. The two notable challenges are the steep Ambassador Bridge ramp around mile 3 and the tunnel exit climb around mile 8; the rest of the course rewards those chasing PRs. A valid WHTI document (passport or passport card) is required for all international-distance participants.
