Fly into Colorado Springs (COS), rent a car, and drive ~50 miles to Cañon City. Rideshare is unreliable outside the city; a car is essentially required. Venue parking is limited — carpooling strongly encouraged.

Colorado Springs (~58 miles) offers more hotel options if Cañon City is booked. Denver (DEN) is ~129 miles and a viable alternative airport with more flights. The mountain bike event on Sunday April 26 makes a two-night stay worthwhile.

Best for / avoid if

Best for

  • scenery seekers
  • intermediate trail runners
  • Colorado locals
  • runners wanting multiple distance options
  • first-time ultra curious runners
  • Scenery lovers
  • Trail runners
  • Altitude training

Avoid if

  • you need pacer support
  • you dislike exposed rocky singletrack
  • altitude is a concern (starts ~6,400 ft)
  • you want a spring race with guaranteed warm weather
  • Altitude sensitivity
  • Weather unpredictability in spring

First-timer mistakes

Underestimating the rocky, technical rim terrain on longer distances and arriving without layers — April in the Royal Gorge can deliver snow, wind, or a bluebird 60°F day.

Where to stay, eat & explore

Local picks for the weekend.

  • The world-famous suspension bridge spans the gorge 956 ft above the Arkansas River — an iconic pre- or post-race visit minutes from the start.

  • Scenic train ride through the bottom of the gorge along the Arkansas River — a memorable non-runner activity for crew and spectators.

  • The Royal Gorge stretch of the Arkansas River offers Class IV–V rapids; multiple outfitters operate out of Cañon City — great for the day after the race.

  • Popular local adventure activity.

Race-trip notes

Base in Cañon City (~10 min from venue) or Colorado Springs (~1 hr). No pacers at any distance. Carpooling to the venue is recommended due to limited parking. The mountain bike event runs Sunday if you want a two-sport weekend.

About this race

The Royal Gorge Groove runs every late April on loop courses starting and finishing at the Gunslingers Club. Trails feature technical rock, flowy singletrack, and sheer canyon rim exposure — with scenery from a former Hollywood western film location. A paired mountain bike event (Royal Gorge Groove Rides) runs the same courses the following Sunday.
