Point-to-point course
You finish in a different place than you start, so plan for transport back to your car or lodging.
Bemidji is a small regional city served by a small airport (BJI) with limited commercial connections; most runners drive from Minneapolis (~2.5 hrs) or Fargo (~2 hrs). A rental car is essentially required. Hotel rooms in Bemidji are limited — book early, especially since the marathon cap is only 300.
Getting around
- Shuttle pickup — Paul Bunyan Trail Start
Exact shuttle pickup location not published; check race-day instructions.
Arrive Friday to catch packet pickup (7–8:45 AM Saturday window is tight for marathoners with an 8:30 start) and the Friday evening races. The Sanford Center serves as race HQ; downtown Bemidji hotels are a short drive or walk. MSP and FAR are the practical fly-in hubs.

- Runners who enjoy small-race atmospheres with big scenery
- Fall foliage chasers in the north Minnesota lakes region
- Runners adding a 26K lake loop as a unique non-standard distance
- first-timers

First-timer mistakes
Missing the registration window (the full marathon has sold out; same-day registration is not available and the deadline is the day before). Also underestimating morning chill — temps at the 8:30 AM gun can be in the low 30s°F.

About this race
First run in 2013, the Bemidji Blue Ox Marathon spans two days: a Friday evening 5K/10K and a Saturday morning slate of 26K Lake Loop, Half Marathon, and full Marathon, all starting and finishing at the Sanford Center lakeside arena. The 26.2-mile loop threads through Lake Bemidji State Park, Bemidji State University, and downtown, crossing the Mississippi headwaters via the Paul Bunyan State Trail. Capped at 300 marathon finishers; the field has sold out in recent years.
