Montebello is remote — no services in the immediate area. Nearest meaningful lodging/dining hub is Waynesboro (~45 min) or Lexington. A rental car is essential; rideshare is effectively unavailable. Fall foliage season means lodging books quickly.

Montebello Campground is the race hub; some runners camp on-site. Blue Ridge Parkway access is within 3 miles. Fly into CHO or ROA (Roanoke, ~75 min) for more flight options.

Best for / avoid if

Best for

  • Experienced ultrarunners seeking a historic, challenging 50-miler
  • Fall foliage scenery lovers
  • Runners who want a point-to-point-style adventure now in loop format
  • Athletes comfortable with 9,000+ ft of gain and mixed terrain
  • seasoned ultrarunners
  • trail and elevation lovers

Avoid if

  • You want a fast, flat road-style ultra
  • You need refunds or deferrals (none offered)
  • You dislike technical rocky singletrack or pre-dawn starts
  • You're a first-time trail runner
  • you dislike lots of climbing
  • you need robust infrastructure

First-timer mistakes

Underestimating the relentless elevation — this isn't a net-downhill cruise anymore. Also note the no-refund/no-deferral policy and that registering after September 15 may forfeit your finisher award.
